- Early external irradiation improves progression-free survival in low grade astrocytoma and oligodendroglioma (Karim et al. Int J Radiat Oncol Biol Phys 52: 2002)

- Low dose irradiation to the para-aortic nodes and liver does not improve survival for patients with resected adenocarcinoma of the rectum (Bosset et al. Radiother Oncol 61:2001)

- Significant increase in disease-free and overall survival in head and neck cancer patients after surgery by the use of chemo-radiotherapy (Bernier et al. Int J Radiat Oncol Biol Phys 51(3): 2001 and Eur J Cancer 37(6): 2001 (abstracts)

- Results boost/no boost study: an additional dose of 16 Gy of radiation to the tumour bed reduces the risk of local recurrence, especially in patients younger than 50 yrs (Bartelink et al. N Engl J Med 345: 2001)

- Long-term results with immediate androgen suppression and external irradiation in patients with locally advanced prostate cancer (an EORTC study): a phase III randomised trial
(Bolla et al. Lancet 360: 103-108, 2002)

- QA report on dummy run procedure in 22922 (internal mammary chain irradiation in early breast cancer) identifies some potential systematic protocol deviations which can be avoided by provision of recommendations to trial participants (Poortmans et al. Int J Radiat Oncol Biol Phys 49: 2001)

- Post-operative irradiation with concomitant cisplatinum improves the survival and disease-free survival of high-risk locally advanced Head and Neck cancer patients.
(Bernier et al. N Engl J Med 2004, 6: 1945-1952)

- Post-operative radiotherapy after radical prostatectomy improves the disease-free survival of patients with clinical T2 pathological / T3 prostate cancer.
(Bolla et al: Lancet 2005, 366:572-578)

- Concomitant chemotherapy by 5FU and leucoverin enhances the tumorocidal effect of pre-operative irradiation in patients with rectal cancer.
(Bosset et al. J Clin Oncol. 2005, 23:5620-5627)

- Concomitant chemotherapy by temozolomide improves the survival rate of patients with glioblastoma multiforme treated by radiotherapy.
(Stupp et al. N Engl J Med. 2005,352:987-996)

CONCLUSION
These advances have been progressively translated into daily clinical practice, demonstrating the EORTC Radiotherapy Group’s contribution to improving results using new radiotherapy techniques alone or in combination with other modalities
